One writer’s aspiration

Welcome readers!
I am excited to begin this endeavor chronicling my journey from humble writer to published author. Here at Academia Gothic, I invoke the spirit of the divine gothic, horror, and academic.

I discovered my love of literature within the pages of Poe, Lovecraft, Shelley, and Dante. My inspiration, along with my bookshelves, grew with each year. Although I often allowed myself to become lost in the fantastical world of fantasy, with wizards and dragons, there has always been a deep fondness and provoking call to the dark and disturbing. Even the origins of our most beloved fairy tales have dark foundations steeped in painful lessons life offers. Especially to those who choose to wander frivolously.

For years, I have postponed the first steps into becoming a published author and becoming career-oriented in the academic study of history. Now, I have decided to take my love of both and pursue my childhood dream. One piece of advice I have heard from mentors throughout my studies is, “write about what you know.” So that’s what I intend to do.

The gothic novel uncovers loss, lies, tragedy, and horror from its shiny ornamented box. Much like the rural south, scenic views and small town charm details such ornamented boxes. I intend to pry it open in all of its hidden grotesque glory. Hallelujah. Sprinkle in some murder and creature features and you have the setting in which I plan to highlight controversial topics including (but not limited to) gender, religion, politics, toxic families, and death. Of course, there will be sweet tea and biscuits and gravy.

Along with regular blog entries, I will be featuring reviews of books currently gracing my TBR pile and travel destinations that ooze dark southern spooky vibes.

I am fully aware that this choice in genre and message I wish my readers to receive will not be well received by many. But this is not a time to sit idly by. I expect to wager losses as well as gains during this journey.

If I haven’t lost you yet, splendid!
Stay tuned in for another installment.

Ta ta for now. And as always, be kind to one another.
